Screening of film «Nadie» (Nobody) in Santiago

Rafael Alcides is Nobody. He has been erased from official literary history despite being one of the most prominent poets of his generation. Miguel Coyula is on his way to being Nobody. He shows an enormous talent as an independent producer, with scarce resources and in a non-stimulating medium he achieves a film that captures, excites and complicates. «But he has the Alcides’ honesty and that leaves him out of the game of festivals, biennials and draws always managed by political expediency and diplomacy» wrote Ricardo Brodsky on the Radio Cooperativa portal after attending the presentation of the documentary “Nobody” in Space O in Santiago de Chile.

The presentation of the documentary “Nobody” in the Chilean capital was attended by its Director, Miguel Coyula (Havana, March 31, 1977), Cuban film director, graduate of the Management Specialty at the International Film and Television School ( EICTV) of San Antonio de los Baños.

The first film by Miguel Coyula was the full-length film Cucarachas rojas, which he filmed during a scholarship at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York. The review in the magazine Variety describes it as "A triumph of technology in the hands of a visionary". His latest film is “Memoirs of Development”, adapted from the homonymous novel by Edmundo Desnoes, author of “Memoirs of Underdevelopment”. Coyula won a Guggenheim scholarship also in New York in 2009 with this project, which performed for the first time at the 2010 Sundance Festival, and then got 20 awards at international festivals.

The International Film Guide chose it as the best Cuban film of 2010 and describes it as one of the best Cuban films of all time. In 2017 “Nobody”, a documentary about the censored poet Rafael Alcides, which was projected at the MoMA in New York, performed for the first time. He is currently working on his fourth feature film “Blue Heart”. He has always worked independently doing the script, photography and publishing his films. He gave workshops in several North American Universities (Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Cornell among others…) where he also presented his movies. He was president of the jury of the 11th exhibition of Young Producers in Havana. His films are characterized as having misfit characters in a brutal criticism of capitalism, religion, the conservative morality of societies and the betrayal of the originally socialist ideals of the Cuban revolution.
