Economic information: Media, politics and companies

On Wednesday September 17th, Thursday September 18th and Friday September 19th 2008, CADAL and the Instituto de Comunicación Social at Universidad Católica Argentina organized the 2008 edition of the seminar “Economic information: Media, politics and companies”. This activity included seven lectures and one panel, counting with the participation of prestigious academics and well-known economic journalists as speakers: Juan Carlos de Pablo, Hugo Grimaldi, Tristán Rodríguez Loredo, Nelson Fernández, Raúl Ferro, José del Río, Armando Torres, Roberto Starke, Alberto Lippi, Jorge Liotti and Fernando Ruiz.

On Wednesday September 17th, Thursday September 18th and Friday September 19th 2008, CADAL and the Instituto de Comunicación Social at Universidad Católica Argentina organized the 2008 edition of the seminar “Economic information: Media, politics and companies”. This activity included seven lectures and one panel, counting with the participation of prestigious academics and well-known economic journalists as speakers: Juan Carlos de Pablo, Hugo Grimaldi, Tristán Rodríguez Loredo, Nelson Fernández, Raúl Ferro, José del Río, Armando Torres, Roberto Starke, Alberto Lippi, Jorge Liotti and Fernando Ruiz.

On Wednesday 18th the opening of the seminar took place with a presentation by Juan Carlos de Pablo about “Economy in the communicative mass media. Journalists and economists making economic journalism”.
Juan Carlos de Pablo is economist, journalist and writer, professor at the University of San Andrés, host of the TV show “Economic Moment” (C5N), editor of the weekly newsletter “Context”, columnist of the magazine Fortuna and author of different books about economic topics.

Thursday, September 18th started with a lecture by Hugo Grimaldi about “The contents of economic information: The sub-specialization”.
Hugo E. Grimaldi is Journalistic Director of the agency DYN (Diarios y Noticias), host of the radio show “Diario por Radio” at El Mundo and former under-director of the newspaper El Cronista Comercial.

Afterwards, Fernando Ruiz presented “Journalism as an economic actor: The case of the Ámbito Financiero”.
Fernando J. Ruiz is professor at Facultad de Ciencias de la Información at Universidad Austral and author of the book “El Señor de los Mercados, Ámbito Financiero, la City y el poder el Periodismo económico, de Martínez de Hoz a Cavallo”.

The day culminated in a presentation by Raúl Ferro about “The difficult relation between companies and business journalism in Latin America”.
Raúl Ferro is responsible for the content development of Business News Americas and former journalistic director of América Economía. In the past he contributed to different publications about business and finances.

The last day, took place on Friday, September 19th, with a panel about “Economic information between companies, media and the public sector”, with the participation of the following speakers: Armando Torres, Jorge Liotti, Roberto Starke and Alberto Lippi. The panel was moderated by Hernán Alberro.
Jorge Liotti is director of Journalistic Communications career at Universidad Católica Argentina and editor of politics at Perfil newspaper.
Roberto Starke is executive director of Nueva Comunicación, consultant for companies on communicational strategies and consultant for political campaigns. He served as Institutional Relations Manager at  Shell.
Armando Torres is image and communications consultant. He founded the newspaper BAE (Buenos Aires Económico) and was formerly press director of the economic ministry.
Alberto Lippi is press chief and spokesman of EDENOR. During two decades he worked as a correspondent for the newspaper El Cronista Comercial in the economic ministry of Argentina.

Afterwards, Tristán Rodríguez Loredo gave his lecture about “Economic journalism and economic policies”.
Tristán Rodríguez Loredo is economist and journalist and chief editor of the magazine Noticias. He also worked as economic columnist for the newspaper Perfil and as editor for the magazines Negocios and Apertura. He is professor for journalism at the Universidad Católica Argentina and at Universidad Austral.

Before, José del Río had realized his presentation “From the macro to the micro: The journalism of business”.
José del Río is journalistic director of the magazine Apertura and economic columnist in the radio show “We are not nobody” by FM Aspen. Formerly, he also worked at El Cronista Comercial and contributed to productions for radio and television.  

To close the seminar, Nelson Fernández presented “The journalistic coverage of a financial crisis”.
Nelson Fernández is correspondent in Uruguay for the newspaper La Nación from Buenos Aires, columnist of the weekly Búsqueda and professor for journalism in the Catholic University of Uruguay.
