Coinciding with the International Day of Human Rights, CADAL’s Program for International Democratic Solidarity reports that it already has 10 volunteers for the Observatory of International Relations and Human Rights. The Observatory of International Relations and Human Rights is a project of the International Democratic Solidarity Program of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL). Its objective is to monitor the internal situation of the countries in which the civil and political liberties are severely repressed and provide moral support for their democratic actors, establishing contacts with similar organizations, promoting or adhering to public campaigns and organizing information events.

The countries considered by the Observatory are those worst qualified as Not Free according to the Freedom in the World Index -Freedom in the World- - by the organization Freedom House.

Countries that have a volunteer assigned to monitor are: Bahrain, Chad, China, Laos, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan. For now are vacant Eritrea, Belarus, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The initial task of each volunteer is to write a short introductory text on the monitored country summarizing political information (political regime, ruler, years in power and background), and severe cases of complaint about the situation of HR.

In order to realize the monitoring each volunteer consults websites of media and independent NGOs and social networking accounts which report on the political situation of the monitored country. Thus there will be an alert on violations of human rights in the monitored country on which CADAL react by issuing a statement, sending it to embassies and in some cases encouraging the presentation of declarations in the Argentine Congress.
