CADAL proposes the Cuban disident Guillermo Fariñas to the International Award of Human Rights Emilio F. Mignone

Emilio Mignone heroically fought together with few people against the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983), while the Cuban regime helped dictator Jorge Rafael Videa to block the resolution condemning Argentina in Geneva for human rights violation. This is why, what better way to make a homage to Mignone than to award someone who is currently facing in a peacefull and brave manner a totalitarian regime that is still in power since more than half a century and which government was a known accomplice of the Argentine military dictatorship.

In a recent formal presentation before the General Director of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Commerce and Cult in the Argentine Republic, the head of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL), presented the Cuban psicologist and journalist Guillermo Fariñas Hernández for the International Award for Human Rights Emilio F. Mignone.

CADAL highlighted that Fariñas "decided to exercise journalism, and assuming the risks associated to this profession, as a means to promote the exercise of free speech in Cuba. His decision confronted him with governmental repression, like other citizens who, from different positions and activities, challenged the totalitarian controls of the regime. Due to the official repression and as a means of protest against the imprisonment of a series of political prisoners gravely ill, Fariñas used the most extreme method of protest: to risk his life, through a hunger strike. With this option, he not only  honors the sense of human solidarity towards the prisoners of conscience in Cuba, but also the human strength to openly express his adhesions and rejects in the most extreme circumstances".

In the principles of this nomination to Fariñas it is concluded that "Emilio Mignone heroically fought together with few people against the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983), while the Cuban regime helped dictator Jorge Rafael Videa to block the resolution condemning Argentina in Geneva for human rights violation. This is why, what better way to make a homage to Mignone than to award someone who is currently facing in a peacefull and brave manner a totalitarian regime that is still in power since more than half a century and which government was a known accomplice of the Argentine military dictatorship".

As annexes to the nomination, CADAL included among other texts, the article by Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman "El ex preso Kirchner y la cuestión cubana", published by Revista Debate, on January 23, 2004: https://www.cadal.org/institucional/pdf/Art_Timerman_en_Debate_sobre_Cuba.jpg and the Document "Unusual Alliance: Cuban-Argentine Relations in Geneva, 1976-1983", by Kezia McKeague and published on March 10, 2006: https://www.cadal.org/documents/?id_nota=1746

The Internatinoal Award for Human Rights Emilio F. Mignone was established on 2007 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Commerce and Cult in Argentina with the aim of recognizing institutions and/or foreign people residing abroad known for their promotion and protection of human rights in their countries, be it in the fight against impunity for massive and sistematic human rights violations as well as for discrimination, social economic and cultural rights, among others.
