Promotion of the Political Opening in Cuba

Paths to a democratic Cuba

Gabriel Salvia and Héctor Schamis, Director General and academic advisor of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL), respectively, participated in the international conference “Paths to a democratic Cuba” which was held on December 3rd and 4th in Mexico City. The event was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and supported by the Cristian Democratic Organization of America (ODCA) and the Network of Latin American Youth for Democracy. In the picture the two representatives of CADAL together with Manuel Cuesta Morúa, spokesman of Arco Progesista in Cuba.

The Director General of CADAL moderated the panel "The civic society and its actions for a change", with the following speakers: the Cuban democrat Reinaldo Escobar (Head of the digital newspaper 14ymedio), Guillermo Fariñas Hernández (spokesman of the Patriotic Union of Cuba) and Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina (Coordinator of the audiovisual project Palenque Visión).

For his part, Héctor Schamis was one of the speakers in the panel "Relations between the world and Cuba: A potential for democratic change?" together with Marifeli Pérez-Stable (Professor at Florida International University), the ambassador Vicky Huddleston (formerheadof the section of the interest of the US in Cuba) and Hildegard Stausberg (diplomatic correspondent of “Die Welt").

In the conference also participated the democratic Cuban activists Manuel Cuesta Morúa (Arco Progresista), Vladimiro Roca (Social Democratic Party of Cuba), Eroises González (Cuban Liberal solidarity Party), Jorge Luis García Pérez (Frente Nacional de Resistencia Cívica y Desobediencia Civil Orlando Zapata Tamayo), René Gómez Manzano (UNPACU) and Rafael León Rodríguez (Cuban Democratic Project).
