CADAL claims presidential candidates for more strength regarding Cuba

The Center for the Opening and Development in Latin America (CADAL) claims Presidential candidates of Argentina who are contending in next october 28 elections, to establish a public standing of strength regarding their future relations with Cuba.

(Buenos Aires, October 8, 2007). The Center for the Opening and Development in Latin America (CADAL) claims Presidential candidates of Argentina who are contending in next october 28 elections, to establish a public standing of strength regarding their future relations with Cuba.

In this regard, CADAL reminds the presidential candidates of the following:

• President Néstor Kirchner had very generous attitudes with dictator Fidel Castro, inviting him his taking office on May 25, 2003; giving in that occasion the tribune of the Law College of Universidad de Buenos Aires; abstaining from condemning Cuba in the now extint UN Human Rights Commission; and voting in favor at the UN General Assembly for the admission of Cuba in the new Human Rights Council.
  
• On July, 2006, during the Summit of MERCOSUR, President Kirchner invited the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro again, and gave him a personal letter asking for a humanitarian attitude allowing Dra. Hilda Molina to travel with her mother to Argentina to visit her son, grandchilren and daughter-in-law. The Cuba government did not answer this letter to the Argentine President and a few months ago these ladies were informed that they would not have an authorization to leave the island.
  
• It is worth adding: the well known complicity of the Cuban regime in blocking the condemnation in Geneva agains Argentina military dictatorship for human rights violation, something that was being promoted by the US government during Carter Administration; and also the two billion dollars debt that the Cuban dictatorship owes Argentina, the payment of which should be demanded taking into account the huge lacks that our country is going through.

So, CADAL recommends Argentina presidential candidates:

• To limit the diplomatic presence in the island with a business attaché, without assigning any ambassador, taking into account that the current political ambassador, Darío Alessandro, was assigned in March 2005 with the express instruction of solving the case of Dra. Hilda Molina, not obtaining any success because of the constant negatives and diplomatic impudence of the Cuban regime.
  
• To question the Cuban government legitimacy, since it does not recognize fundamental democratic liberties, and to demand for the release of all the prisoners for political motives in the island as well as for the call of free and multiparty elections under international supervision.
