The Cuban prisoner of concience, Orlando Zapata Tamayo, recognized by Amnesty International, died today after a long hunger strike of more than 80 days. This wellknown activist of Cuban democratic oposition was unjustly enjailed since March 20, 2003, condemned to a long sentence for peacefully oposing the government.

The Cuban dictatorship of the Castro brothers is to held responsible for this death, with grave denounciations of violence against Zapata Tamayo in the provincial prison of Holguín, in the prison of Kilo 8 of Camagüey and in the Hospital Amalia Simoni of the same city.

Zapata Tamayo began his hunger strike on December 3, 2009. "Orlando Zapata Tamayo has been murdered, they killed him. The death of my son has been a premeditated murder. I thank all the brothers who fought so as not to let my son die. There was another Pedro Luis Boitel in Cuba", said his mother, Reina Tamayo, to Directorio Democrático Cubano.

"With its support or indulgence, and with indiference towards those who fight for democracy and human rights inside the island, Latin American governments and regional organizations are accomplices with the Castro brothers for this death" added Gabriel Salvia, Chairman of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL).

For Salvia, "Cuban revolution is an irremediable dictatorship and if it is not pressured regionally and internationally like with other repressive regimes, innocent people will continue dying or rotting in long years in Castro jails".
