Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Your Excellence Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė visits CADAL

Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Your Excellence Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė, visited the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) where she held a meeting with Gabriel Salvia and Hernán Alberro, General Director and Programs Director of CADAL, respectively. Vice-Minister assisted accompanied by Vaclovas Salkauskas, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania in Argentina; and Irena Skullerud, Head of the Division of Latin America, Asia and Pacific from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Your Excellence Asta Skaisgiryte. Liauškiene., visited the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) where she held a meeting with Gabriel Salvia and Hernán Alberro, General Director and Programs Director of CADAL, respectively. Vice-Minister assisted accompanied by Vaclovas Salkauskas, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania in Argentina; and Irena Skullerud, Head of the Division of Latin America, Asia and Pacific from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

During the meeting, Asta Skaisgiryte. Liauškiene. whose country currently chairs the Community of Democracies (CD) offered details of the meeting of the CD that will take place from June 30 to July 2 in the city of Vilnius, Capital of Lithuania. On this regard, Gabriel Salvia presented her a letter with recommendations by the Project Puente Democrático of CADAL on “Foreign Policy and human rights”. Among the recommendations from the Project Puente Democrático, are the following:

- That member states of the CD commit themselves to make public their vote in the election of countries for the UN Human Rights Council, including its authorities.

- That as a Latin American CSO we ask member states of the CD that, through their diplomatic representations in Havana, to give acknowledgment, protection and internet access to members of Cuban civic movement who peacefully promote a political opening in their country.

Also, Asta Skaisgiryte. Liauškiene. was interested in CADAL’s opinion on the human rights situation in the countries of Latin America.

Among the activities under her competence, Vice-Minister is in charge of shaping and implementing of Lithuania’s policy within the United Nations Organization, the Council of Europe and other multilateral frameworks; the development of relations with the countries of South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania; and the Relations with the world’s Jewish communities, Holocaust issues and Jewish cultural heritage.

Asta Skaisgiryte. Liauškien studied International Relations at the International Institute of Public Administration de France and at Philology Faculty, Vilnius University.

As an officer of the Republic of Lithuania, she was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the State of Israel (2006-2009), Director of the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania (2003-2006), Ambassador-at-Large of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania (2003), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the French Republic, the Republic of Tunisia (1998-2003), Counsellor for international relations to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania (1995-1998), Head of the Nordic Division, Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania (1994-1995), First Secretary at the Western European Division, Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania (1993-1994), and Head of the Interparliamentary Office of the Supreme Council (Reconstituent Seimas) of the Republic of Lithuania (1990-1992).

She received the awards: Medal of January 13 of the Republic of Lithuania; Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania; French National Order of the Commander of the Legion of Honour; French Grand Cross of Legion of Merit.

Between 1989 and 1990 she worked as a correspondent of weekly “Atgimimas”.

Mrs. Asta Skaisgiryte. Liauškiene. was born on March 20, 1966 in Kaunas, she is married and is mother of a son.
