International Democratic Solidarity program of CADAL (Puente Democrático) nominated the Ladies in White for United Nations Human Rights Prize "in recognition for outstanding achievements in Human Rights".The Ladies in white began as a group of female relatives of 75 prisoners of conscience imprisoned during 2003 for peacefully expressing their views against the government. After the release of the 75 prisoners, the Ladies in White have continued their campaign for the release of political prisoners and the lifting of the fundamental restrictions in Cuba.
In the nomination, it is mentioned that according to Amnesty International "Ladies in White and their supporters were repeatedly subjected to arbitrary arresting and physical assaults during protests that they organized in several cities in Cuba. The Ladies in white repeatedly reported physical and verbal attacks by government supporters during peaceful protests".The United Nations Human Rights Prize "is an honorary recognition that is given to people and organizations in recognition for an outstanding achievement in Human Rights". Established by General Assembly in 1966, the Prize was first awarded in 1968, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to the office High Commissioner of UN Human Rights, this "Award is not only for public recognition, but also to send a clear message to Human Rights defenders in the world that the International community is grateful for, and supports their tireless efforts to promote Human Rights for all".Previous winners of this Award include: Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Red Cross, Amnesty International, Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Estela de Carlotto and more.
