Request to the French Foreign Minister on his visit to Cuba

The director of CADAL reminded the French Foreign Minister of the French delegation’s claim in Geneva during the last universal periodic review in Cuba. In said opportunity, France recommended that the regime of Raúl Castro ensure the freedoms of speech and pacific assembly, as well as the free activity of Human Rights defenders, independent journalists and political opponents.

In a message to his private secretary in Paris and officials of French embassy in Havana, the director of CADAL, Gabriel Salvia requested the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Fabius, to claim concrete initiatives of political opening and a consequent release of the peaceful dissidents from the Cuban government.

Salvia reminded the French Foreign Minister of the French delegation’s claim in Geneva during the last universal periodic review in Cuba. In said opportunity, France recommended that the regime of Raúl Castro ensure the freedoms of speech and pacific assembly, as well as the free activity of Human Rights defenders, independent journalists and political opponents.

The director of CADAL told the Foreign Minister, Fabius that the Cuban government categorically refused the French delegation’s advice and continues to systematically suppress democratic freedoms.

As an example of the Cuban regime’s continued repression, CADAL told the French Foreign Minister about the particular situation of Manuel Cuesta Morúa, spokesman of Arco Progresista. Cuesta Morúa was the principal local organizer of the alternative forum to the CELAC Summit in Havana, scheduled for the 28th of last January and prevented from being carried out.

The petition to H.E. Laurent Fabius also included CADAL’s traditional request, included in the institutional proposal on the commondemocratic agenda in foreign policy and human rights, in order to get the French embassy in Havana to recognize and protect the peaceful opponents of the Cuban single-party government.
