CADAL nominated Cuban Manuel Cuesta Morúa to Václav Havel Human Rights Award

The Václav Havel Human Rights Award is presented each year by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Václav Havel Library and the Charter 77 Foundation to reward the action of the prominent civil society in defence of human rights in Europe and beyond. The first awarding took place on September 30, 2013, where Ales Bialiatski, a Belarusian human rights activist, was honoured.

The Programme for International Democratic Solidarity of CADAL, Puente Democratico, nominated Manuel Cuesta Morúa, spokesman of Progressive Cuban  Arch, for the Václav Havel Human Rights Award 2014. The award is given in memory of Václav Havel, playwright, opponent of totalitarianism, and architect of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, president of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic and a lasting symbol of the opposition to dictatorship.

This award aims to reward the civil society action in defence of human rights in Europe and beyond. Candidates must have made a difference in the human rights situation in a particular group, have contributed to the discovery of large-scale systemic violations, or have successfully mobilized public opinion or the international community for a certain cause.

The Arco Progressive party officially was officially born with the initiative of Manuel Cuesta Morúa in 2008 with the intention of bringing together organizations of social-democratic nature hitherto scattered inside and outside Cuba. In the year mentioned the Social Coordinator of Cuba, the Cuban Democratic Socialist Current and the People's Party, decided to found the party to unite the Cuban left wing parties. On July 20 of that year the first party convention , where he confirms that it belongs to the tradition of "liberal socialism and Christian socialism, merged into a centre-left party , able to offer a better alternative for change and democratic stability for the present and future of the Cuban nation".
