A Visit from a Prestigious Paraguayan Journalist
Journalist Cándido Figueredo Ruíz, a correspondent for the newspaper ABC Color in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero on Paraguay’s border with Brazil, visited the City of Buenos Aires from May 31 to June 30. He has found himself obligated to live under permanent police protection for the past two decades to protect him from the criminals he exposes in his coverage. He won the 2015 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) for his work investigating criminal activities. On June 2, 2012, the New York Times ran an article profiling him entitled «Exposing Drug Secrets, From a Well-Guarded Bunker». During his stay in Argentina’s capital, he was declared a Guest of Honor of the Independent City of Buenos Aires by its legislative body.
Cándido Figueredo Ruíz, born in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero in the Republic of Paraguay, is a corresponding journalist for the chief Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color. For more than twenty years he has carried out valiant journalistic work investigating criminal activities linked to drug trafficking on the border between Paraguay and Brazil. His work as a journalist stands out not just for his exposure of drug traffickers, but also for his investigation of cartels, corruption, and narco-politics.

On Tuesday, June 6, Cándido celebrated his birthday in Buenos Aires with members of CADAL.

Figueredo Ruíz was received by S.E. Barbro Elm, the Swedish ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
