Civic Consensus meets for its first debate: Demand for the independence of the Attorney General

On the eve of the replacement of the National Attorney General, Consenso Cívico invited the following speakers: former Attorney of the National Treasury, Dr. Rubén Citara; Chamber Member and Board Member of the Judiciary, Dr. Ricardo Recondo; and the former National Attorney General, Dr. Juan Gauna.

Marking the start of joint activities by the Consenso Cívico, the foundations Argentina Siglo 21, Alem, CIESO, Consenso Republicano, CADAL, Movimiento Productivo Argentino, Nuevas Generaciones y Pensar, gathered at Centro Argentino de Ingenieros for their first discussion about "The Administration of the Court and its Role in Defending Democracy."

On the eve of the replacement of the National Attorney General, the former Attorney of the National Treasury, Dr. Rubén Citara, argued that "at this moment, so long as the Executive Power has the right to appoint the Attorney General, the independence of the Attorney will be a lie." Along the same lines, Dr. Ricardo Recondo, Member of the Chamber and Member of the Judicial Council, expressed "that the famous democracy, of which many politicians talk, is sometimes circumscribed - such as in Venezuela, and sadly we are following that path - to 'electoral despotism.' In fact, the winner must respect the law. And this is one of the justices' tasks, that they must verify that the political decision complies with the administration's submission to the law of honesty." And finally, the former National Attorney General, Dr. Juan Gauna, concluded that "the real problem that the Argentinians have is neither only the independence of the Attorney General, nor solely judicial independence, but rather that we have abandoned the division of power. We cannot replace that system with one that is single and authoritarian, therefore it is important that we understand each of the public institutions, which has a significant impact of the life of society."

Meanwhile, before press releases that mistakenly characterized the first joint announcement of Consenso Cívico as an act in favor of PRO, Micaela Hierro read a statement on behalf of the convening institutions, in order to clarify that their meeting "does not aspire to be a political party, but rather a forum for debate and expression of ideas that, while coming from different perspectives, share a common foundation of republican values and the defense of the rule of law, joined with different foundations and organizations, integrating independent citizens and those with political memberships."
