The welcoming remarks were delivered by Frantisek Fleisman, from the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Spain; Laura Tedesco, from Saint Louis University Madrid; and Gabriel C. Salvia, General Director of CADAL. Among the attendees were students from the Czech Republic in Madrid and Cuban human rights activists.
One of the attendees, Eugenia Gutiérrez, Cuban journalist and activist, gave the following testimony after watching the film “Milada”, by Czech director David Mrnka: “It is a moving portrait of Milada Horáková, Czech activist and parliamentarian who fought against two totalitarian regimes: Nazism and communism. Her story shows her unwavering loyalty to her principles, even after suffering the ordeal of a concentration camp. The film highlights her strength of character and her refusal to be blackmailed, making her a heroine who put her ideals before her personal and family life. Milada understood that her sacrifice was necessary to build a better world, especially for future generations. The film, intimate in nature, reflects her family and emotional life through dialogues with her loved ones, revealing Milada's deep commitment to her country and to human rights.Despite the horrors she faced, including her execution at the hands of the communist regime, her legacy lives on today. The film not only allows us to learn about her life, but also underscores the importance of her struggle, showing how her principles and courage continue to inspire those who defend freedoms and human rights. However, beyond the suffering, the film is also an allegory about life and death, a tribute to the strength of a woman who never lost sight of her ideals. The film's ending offers a moving reflection on the transcendence of Milada's sacrifice and the impact it continues to have on the history of her country and of humanity.” /p>
Another attendee, Frisia Batista Mokárzel, said: “As president of Raíces de Esperanza (“Roots of Hope”) in Spain, I am inspired by the film 'Milada. The story of Milada Horáková, a Czech human rights defender, reminds us of the importance of fighting for justice. At Raíces de Esperanza, we believe that Cuban youth can be agents of change, and Milada's bravery sets a perfect example. This film motivates us to continue working for a more just and free Cuba. We sincerely thank CADAL for inviting our board of directors. Their support is invaluable as we continue to empower Cuban youth and foster positive change in our communities.”
