Political use of memory and the future of democracy in Latin America

The activity took place at Museo Roca, in Buenos Aires, with the participation of the following speakers: Graciela Fernández Meijide, Carlos March, Bernardo Sorj, Adolfo Zaldívar, Pablo Romero García, Samuel Cabanchik, Martín Becerra, Alejandro Alfie, Fernando Ruiz, Martín Hourest, Margarita Stolbizer and Norma Morandini.

 

During september 27 and 28, Plataforma Democrática, Ciudadanía y Democracia and CADAL, organized this seminar with the aim of discussing the tension between the political use of the past and the possibilities of imagining the regional future. The activity took place at Museo Roca, in Buenos Aires, with the participation of the following speakers: Graciela Fernández Meijide, Carlos March, Bernardo Sorj, Adolfo Zaldívar, Pablo Romero García, Samuel Cabanchik, Martín Becerra, Alejandro Alfie, Fernando Ruiz, Martín Hourest, Margarita Stolbizer and Norma Morandini.

The opening of the event was in charge of Gabriel Palumbo, from Ciudadanía & Democracia.

The first panel, moderated by Martín Waserman, analized "Civil society and the furute of democracy”, with the participation of speakers Graciela Fernández Meijide (Former secretary of CONADEP), Carlos March (Executive Director of Avina) and Bernardo Sorj (Plataforma Democrática).

The second panel, moderated by Facundo Calegari, was dedicated to "Thinking the future of democracy", with the presentations by Samuel Cabanchik (National Senator), Pablo Romero García (Universidad Católica de Uruguay – Revista Arjé) and Adolfo Zaldívar (Ambassador of Chile in Argentina).

On the second day, the third panel of the seminar, moderated by Gastón Vega, analized the "Media, new media and transformations of public sphere in Latin America". The speakers were: Fernando Ruiz (Universidad Austral), Alejandro Alfie (journalist at Clarín newspaper) and Martín Becerra (Universidad Nacional de Quilmes).

The last panel, moderated by Gabriel Palumbo, was entitled: "Questioning memory. Past, Present and future of democracy in South America". The speakers of this panel were: Martín Hourest (Legislator Igualdad Social), Margarita Stolbizer (Congresswoman, GEN) and Norma Morandini (National Senator, PN).
