In the presence of Jorge Olivera Castillo, Cuban writer and former political prisoner, CADAL opened in its headquarters a library specialized in Cuba, democracy, human rights, transitions, authoritarianism and totalitarianism.
The library bears the name of Laura Pollán, one of the founders of “Las Damas de Blanco”, including wives, mothers and daughters of Cuban political prisoners arrested during the repressive wave of March 18th 2003, known as Cuba’s “Black Spring”.
Pollán was born on 13 February 1948, in Manzanillo, Cuba, and died on 14 October 2011 in Havana. Her cause of death is still unclear, although the medical report says it was from respiratory failure.
