Visit from the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies
CADAL hosted Thomas Garrett and Patricia Galdamez, the Secretary General and the Civil Society Coordinator of the Community of Democracies, respectively, at its Buenos Aires headquarters. Founded in 2000, the Community of Democracies is headquartered in Warsaw.
Participants from CADAL included Gabriel Salvia, the General Director, Hernán Alberro, Programs Director, Diana Arévalo, Project Coordinator, and Gaia Marchiori, International Relations Assistant.
During the meeting, CADAL’s history of participation in previous Community of Democracies events in Warsaw was reviewed. In addition, it was proposed to Secretary General Garrett that the Community of Democracies’ member states consider the two proposed reforms for the integration of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Following the meeting, the Secretary General visited the photo gallery “Citizen Havel,” which is displayed in the reception room at CADAL.
The Community of Democracies was founded in 2000 during the Ministerial Conference of Warsaw. The conference, sponsored by Poland and the United States, convened delegations from 106 countries. Signed June 27th, 2000, the concluding statement of the conference, “Toward a Community of Democracies,” established, among other things, the constitutive values of democracy and support for those countries fighting for liberty and democracy. Ultimately, this consisted of an international coalition of democratic countries aiming to promote guidelines that strengthen the democratic norms and institutions that already exist around the world.
The mission of the Community of Democracies serves as a global platform for the exchange of dialogue and advice that can build and strengthen the democratic order within each country and internationally. The Community of Democracies’ members are countries that adhere to the democratic standards defined and adopted in the 2000 Warsaw and the 2002 Seoul conferences.
