Promotion of the Political Opening in Cuba

Book presentation at Westchester Regional Library

CADAL and El Toque organized in Miami the presentation of the book «75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Views from Cuba», with the participation as speakers of jurist Julio Antonio Fernández Estrada, one of the authors of the book, and journalist Mónica Baró Sánchez.

The opening of the presentation was in charge of José Jasán Nieves, editor of "El Toque", and an introduction by Gabriel C. Salvia, General Director of CADAL and compiler of the book. The presentation of the book took place at the Westchester Regional Library in Miami.

Julio Antonio Fernández Estrada was Full Professor since 2013 at the Law School of the University of Havana. He is currently a Fellow in the Scholars at Risk Program at Harvard University from the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Mónica Baró Sánchez is a journalist, won the 2019 Gabo Prize from the Gabriel García Márquez Foundation and is currently a fellow at New York University

75 años de la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos: Miradas desde Cuba

The authors gathered in the book are historian, political scientist and political dissident Manuel Cuesta Morúa (Havana, 1962); jurist and historian Julio Antonio Fernández Estrada (Havana, 1975), prestigious former tenured professor -until his expulsion- at the Law School of the University of Havana, who is currently a fellow of the Harvard University Scholars at Risk Program from the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies; and independent journalist Reinaldo Escobar (Camagüey, 1947), founder in 2014 , along with his wife Yoani Sánchez, of the digital newspaper 14ymedio. The book includes the speech of art critic Guy Pérez de Cisneros at the presentation for a vote of the draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). The book contains the Declaration and each of its articles illustrated by Cuban artists Julio Llópiz-Casal (Havana, 1984), María Esther Lemus Cordero (Havana, 1990) and Renier Quer Figueredo (Havana, 1983). Anthropologist and cultural promoter Hilda Landrove, a Cuban living in Mexico, is the author of the prologue. To download the book in spanish for free click here
